TIMBERON DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL Minutes of the Meeting Held January 09, 2010 IN ATTENDANCE: Everett Putney Fran Trendler Kent Huisingh Jane Huisingh Rick Merrick Cal Tyler Mary Tyler Gwen Adams B.F. Adams Burt Rubinowitz Shirley Holstrom Frank Hodnett Judy Hodnett John Howell Tammy Bean Jackie Fioretti The meeting was called to order by President Everett Putney at 10:00 AM. The Pledge of Allegiance was given by all and a prayer was given by B. F. Adams Everett asked if anyone wanted the minutes read from the last meeting. A motion was made by B. F. Adams to accept the minutes as submitted, it was seconded by Burt Rubinowitz. The minutes were approved. A Treasurer’s report was given by Fran Trendler. A motion was made by Jane Huisingh and seconded by Shirley Holstrom to accept the report as given. Motion approved. Bills for October totaled $716.51. Burt Rubinowitz made a motion to pay our bills and B. F. Adams seconded it. Motion approved. Old Business: We are waiting to hear from BLM, Bureau of Land Management, or the New Mexico Association of Counties to see if we have been granted money to produce and mail the fire cd, thin the Fire Department Sub Station land and clear corners. The cd project is approximately $3,000.00. Shirley Holstrom made a motion to go ahead with the fire cd production and mailing. Kent Huising seconded the motion and it was approved. It was agreed specs need to be written for the contractors. Frank Hodnett brought brochures that were produced by Robin W. Richard in Carlsbad, NM. They were color and on glossy paper. He advised she is very reasonable and we might look into her pricing for a Timberon brochure. Rick Merrick gave a report on the State Forestry WUI, Wildland Urban Interface, Grant. It is still there and there are no minimum requirements to participate. There are new forms and guidelines and thinning on private property may be done by contractors or the land owner. The grant is administered by South Central Mountain RC&D and anyone interested may contact Andrew Fredrickson with State Forestry. It was agreed we need a newspaper article to promote this. Gwen Adams and Shirley Holstrom will write the article for the newspaper. Burt Rubinowitz gave an update on cell phone service in Timberon. Dell Telephone Board of Directors has met with ENMR Plateau. Pricing has been agreed upon and there is progress. A timeframe has not been established. There will be more on this later. Page 2 Everett Putney advised Otero County has striped Sacramento Road. It was mentioned the street sweeper swept Sacramento one day and the next day there was ice but the stripe was painted anyway. Thanks to Fran Trendler and Superior Copy Machine we have a new copy machine to replace the broken one. The new machine will not handle card stock and a sign will be put on the front of the machine. New Business: It is time for our annual audit on the financial books. Stella Griffith and Kent Huising volunteered to do the audit. The audit needs to be completed in January and a report given at the February meeting. Jane Huising gave a report on the July 4th Committee. The committee met last month on December 22nd and established Saturday, July 03, 2010 for the activities and it will bee called “Timberon Western Days”. Jeremy’s annual ATV Run will be held on Sunday, July 4th. Applications will be mailed soon to the venders. Shirley Holstrom is looking into having Smokey Bear here on July 3rd. It was mentioned TWSD is looking into having Founders Day on July 5th and all Timberon property owners will be able to use all recreation facilities free for that day. Volunteers and ideas are needed for July 3rd. You may contact Jane Huising. Rick Merrick advised the second meeting of the Timberon businesses will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 7:00pm at the TDC office. The purpose of the meeting is to get their input on what they would like to see happen in the community to help them grow their business. The first meeting identified more venues, more exposure for their business, projects on off weekends, music and bingo. It was agreed by those present, TDC would sponsor the “Labor of Love” event this year. We are looking for May through August events. We need to use Mary Glover Park more than we do. Someone asked about electricity and water in the Mary Glover Park? Everett Putney advised the last time he checked into it the project would be between the Timberon Water and Sanitation District and Otero County. Volunteers are needed for the following: 1. Pick up rocks along the sides of the airstrip so the grass can be mowed. 2. Cut the scrub oak on TDC’s Sacramento Road property. Rick also mentioned there will be horse stables for rent this year. Everett Putney advised there is a meeting on January 12 & 13, 2010 with State Forestry, Bureau of Land Management and others near Belen, New Mexico. He has a conflict and would like for Rick Merrick to attend for Timberon Development Council. After discussion, B. F. Adams made a motion for Rick Merrick to attend the meeting and for TDC to pay his expenses. The motion was seconded by Jane Huising and it was approved. Everett mentioned he read in the American Farmland Magazine that in the state of New Mexico there are 19 CO-OP that will buy back electricity and Otero County Electric is one of them. Kent Huising advised there is a wood pellet plant being built in Tularosa, New Mexico. Page 3 Everett Putney introduced Tammy Bean who works for Otero County Electric and Tularosa Basin Telephone Company in the area of economic development for Otero County. Tammy advised she was instrumental in helping the Tularosa Premier Pellet Plant get started. The feasibility study for the pellet plant was completed by the Arrowhead Center at NMSU (New Mexico State University). She talked about a new program called “Live and Work in New Mexico” whereby your work can be located in some other state but you can live in New Mexico and work from your home. We look forward to working with her in future business development in Timberon. Tammy also mentioned Home and Garden TV is giving away a grand prize of over $2 million which includes a home in Sandia Park, New Mexico, $500K in cash and a new 2010 GMC Terrain. Everett Putney read a Christmas card and note to the Timberon Development Council from Barbara Jordon, a card and Christmas CD from Kathy and Steve Worrell, a card and donation from Sue and Dwight Haisley. Everett will respond to each of them. B.F. Adams mentioned Frank Hodett has been named Chaplain of the Timberon Fire Department. Congratulations! Frank. Shirley Holstrom made a motion to adjourn and Jane Huisingh seconded the motion. The motion was approved and the meeting adjourned approximately 11:57 am.
